How Custom Enamel Pins Are Made

How custom enamel pins are made depends on the approved product type. Hard enamel, soft enamel, 3D die cast, offset printed and interactive pins do not share one interchangeable manufacturing sequence.

Every route begins with artwork and a recorded production specification. Tooling or forming, color application, finishing, assembly and inspection then follow the construction approved for that design.

Start with artwork review

The custom pin production process starts by checking the artwork against the intended size, shape and product type. Metal borders, printed details, relief, moving parts and attachment positions are reviewed differently because they lead to different production routes.

Record the production specification

The digital proof and production specification establish the agreed dimensions, shape, pin process, visible color or print, metal finish, attachment and packaging. Production begins only after that basis has been approved.

How enamel pins are made after proof approval

The approved construction determines the mold, tooling or metal-forming basis. A flat pin with separated color cells, a dimensional cast body and a printed metal face do not use the same preparation.

One mold or forming route cannot be assigned to every order. The quoted design and selected process determine those details.

Hard enamel pin production

Hard enamel pins use a formed metal design that separates the approved color areas with metal borders. Enamel is filled and cured, then the face is polished where applicable until the enamel and metal lines finish at a smooth, level surface.

The approved plating remains visible on the borders and other exposed metal. Attachment assembly and inspection follow the recorded reverse layout and finish specification.

Soft enamel pin production

Soft enamel pins preserve raised borders around recessed color cells in the formed metal. Enamel is placed in those cells and cured without the final level-polishing stage used to create a hard-enamel face.

Because the metal lines remain above the color, plating is part of the visible texture. Posts or other approved attachments are assembled according to the proof before the finished pieces move to inspection.

3D die cast pin production

A 3D die cast pin begins with molten metal formed in a dimensional mold carrying the approved high and low relief. The cast body is cleaned, polished where the design requires it and plated to retain the modeled depth.

A 3D pin does not automatically require enamel filling. Color areas, if any, must be included in the approved model and finish specification rather than assumed from the enamel-pin family name.

Offset printed pin production

Offset printed pins place approved artwork directly onto a prepared metal face. A clear epoxy coating can be added when it is included in the approved specification.

Printing replaces the enamel-filling stage for the visible artwork. Gradients and small printed details therefore need print-ready review rather than metal borders between every color.

Interactive pin production and assembly

Interactive enamel pins add a structure-specific assembly stage. Each metal component first follows the approved hard- or soft-enamel route where applicable.

Spinner components need an approved pivot and movement clearance. Puzzle or interlocking pieces need coordinated edges and an independent post layout for each wearable part. Assembly is therefore a defined production stage, not an accessory added after a standard pin is finished.

Apply plating, finishing and attachments

Polishing is used where the approved process calls for it; it is not a universal final step. Posts, clutches, magnets, pivots or other reviewed hardware are assembled according to the production specification.

Inspect, count and pack the order

Inspection compares the finished pieces with the approved specification. The quality workflow covers visible enamel or print, plating, shape, attachments, assembly, packing condition and quantity verification.
