Hard enamel color is filled, cured and polished until the enamel sits level with the metal borders. The face is smooth, and the exposed metal lines remain part of the polished design.
Soft enamel leaves the color recessed below raised metal lines. That height difference is visible and tactile, giving outlines and separated color fields more physical definition.

Hard enamel works naturally with clean color blocks, continuous metal borders and designs intended to read as a flat, polished face. Soft enamel is useful when raised linework and visible depth are meant to contribute to the design.
Both processes still depend on workable color separation. Fine text, narrow color areas and small gaps need to remain legible at the intended finished size; choosing hard or soft enamel does not remove that constraint.
